I bought the PC 690L RVS kit with two bases. The operation at first was fine, but developed intermittent start after a little use. It appeared that the line cord was the culprit... I could "adjust" the position of the line cord at the strain relief and it would start or stop. A line cord failure is extremely rare and indeed I could find no problem with the cord itself. After lots at troubleshooting and multiple reassembly of the end cap where the wires are, I discovered that the router operated fine until I tightened one of the end cap mounting screws to the end point of its travel. Thorough examination of the controller printed circuit assembly and resoldering several leads and components did not reveal any cause or resolve the problem. At this point, root cause of the problem is unknown. I just put lock-tite on the screw and tightened it to the point of shutdown and backed off half a turn. At least now the router is useful. Anyone else have similar problem?

Porter Cable is still the undisputed king of routers. This router really delivers. I choose it because its the perfect size for a router table. I never did see the reason for buying a big honking 3 1/2 HP router for a router table. You cannot take off that much wood in a single pass so why all the extra power. This design works great for me and still does a great job without burning the wood. I use oak and maple a lot, so it really works well for me.

Purchased the Milwaukee 5616-24 Router to replace my old Black & Decker. I works very smooth and surprisingly quiet for how big it is. It's larger and heavier than the B&D but the ergonomics feels better. I'll still use my B&D for small jobs.

I haven't used the plunge stand yet but thought it was a good idea to have for future projects. The case it comes in is massive and a bit of a waste for me. I incorporated every thing into one of my shop drawers for easy access. I can see if your using it on a job site it would be handy but for most folks it goes into the shop and the case goes to the attic. It would be nice to offer it as an accessory and save a few bucks off the price.

I saved big buying this from Amazon, they wanted $60 more at the local home centers around here.

I originally purchased a Porter-Cable 895PK Fixed and Plunge Base Router Kit, and immediately sent it back (without even bothering to plug it in) due to the tremendous amount of slop in the mechanism that raises and lowered the router (it had a full 3/4 turn of the indicator dial before the gears engaged - totally unacceptable! Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed in the lack of quality in the PC router.

Based on the research I did on-line, including here at Amazon. The Milwaukee seemed like a good bet.

I must say so far I am not disappointed. The router is light, well balanced and smooth in operation. The fit and finish are excellent and the height adjustment mechanism works flawlessly - no gear slop what-so-ever.

The router has electronic speed control and soft-start, however, the soft-start is not very "soft" and it will twist a bit when powering up if you don't hold it tight. Other than that this is a great router. A HUGE improvement over the PorterCable for $70 less!

Others have complained about the case, but I don't mind it. The two "wing" design works well, locking the router, wrenches and accessory base in-place when the case is closed. (It is important to open it properly. Set it straight up on a counter and open each wind down, which unlocks everything). The case is a bit big, but other than that the router and fixed and plunge bases work great. It is good to see someone is still making quality tools.

Amazon's price was the lowest I found and they shipped it (free) pretty fast, taking about 5 days to get here.

Bottom line - if you are looking for a good mid-sized router that is made well, give this one a try.

The 5616-24 with it's 2.2HP, EVS, variable speed and 1/4" and 1/2" collets along with fixed and plunge bases seemed to fit the bill. So far, I have not been disappointed.

The soft start gives only a very light jolt as the motor comes up to speed. The motor is much, much quieter than I had expected and I cannot detect even the slightest vibration.

The plunge base seems a little stiff, but I suspect I will get used to it and it will be easier in time. The depth adjustment is great and, from my limited usage, can be fairly accurate. Though, I still like to double check the depth with my rule. The turret stop works well when there is a need to make multiple passes in hardwood for a dado or groove.

The fixed base is a joy to use. The body grip gives exceptional control and puts the power switch in reach of my right thumb. Once again, depth settings are easy to make with the turn of the knob.

Changing bases is somewhat awkward as the motor and base are a tight fit. But, if you can fit them just right, they slide together with ease. The problem I've had is my own error. A little more time and care always leads to an easy result.

I've not yet built my router table. I'm looking forward to putting this router to the test there. The power seems more than adequate for using larger profile bits and the adjustable speed will certainly help towards good results. The only thing that might be a frustration is changing bits in a table. It's a little difficult using two wrenches and making sure your bit doesn't bottom out. I'm hoping I won't have to remove the motor every time I want to change bits. I've also not used the dust collector attachment.

I am very pleased with my purchase. Being my first router, I've not yet discovered anything that I am missing (except for easy bit changes, but I knew that going in). I feel that this router will be a great help in developing my woodworking skills and building some fun projects.

I have been really pleased with this product. I purchased the Milwaukee after getting (and returning) the Porter Cable Multi-base Router. There is no comparison between the two. Milwaukee is much higher quality. I wish all tools were made this solid and engineered with such great care. This is a quality tool from the case to every part inside it! I had a problem with it within the first 8 months. I was worried about getting it repaired. However, I found that Milwaukee is repaired locally and when I took it in, the guys in the shop said there isn't a better company out their than Milwaukee. No questions asked. They would even pay the shipping if I did not want to bother stopping by the shop to pick it up when done! Wish everyone gave that kind of service!

I purchased this router with some apprehension because of all the great reviews I was reading on tool websites about the Bosch routers. Let me say those reviews must have been sponsored by Bosch as this router is a joy to work with. I have used the Bosch on the job and liked it's performance but it just didn't meet my expectations of what I was expecting in a router. The Milwaukee exceeded the Bosch in every category. Holding the tool you can tell by the heft that it is going to pack more power. The start-up is smooth and effortless. When running through wood you can move quickly with no bogging down. The Base change is straightforward and painless. Bits are changed with two wrenches (supplied) and takes no time at all. The Plunge base has release and depth adjustments in easy reach and moves smoothly weather you are applying even pressure to both sides or just to one side. The case it comes with feels sort of empty as there are a multitude of slots for additional accessories. I'd love to mention something I felt needed improvement but I haven't run into any short-comings as of yet and can only shower praise to the this tool. No regrets.

This palm router has the power of full size one. I prefer to use this one over the full size because it is quick and easy to use. I have not use it on hardwoods but I have no doubt that it will work just as great. I had bought Central Machinery palm router from Harbor Freight, what a joke. You get what you pay for. Bought two routers. one for my son-in-law and one for myself. I'm very please with the weight, balance and power of the unit. I've hogged out blocks of wood for solid picture frame, used a straight bit to level up over hangs and done 1/8 and 1/4 inch round overs. The slow start up is great, otherwise it would torque right out of your hand. adjustments are quick and easy. The manufacturer supplies two wrenches, one to turn the lock nut, and one to hold the shaft. This was a deficiency noted in previous comments. I've another request, add some kind of extension to keep bobblers like me from tilting the motor when in use. no matter how I grip the motor, I usually manage to wobble the motor, leaving gouges and burn marks.

I bought one of these in a kit with several attachments about three years ago. I have two big Porter Cable routers mounted in tables and use three different hand held Bosch routers for almost everything else. I love the Bosch routers and when it came time for me to buy a smaller router the Colt was at the top of my list. One of the attachments broke on its first use and I discovered only the router is covered under the warranty. Not long after the router was out of warranty the spindle lock stopped working forcing me to grind down an old wrench so that I could hold the spindle to remove bits. I have also had the height slip and I have the collar as tight as I can adjust it and still change the depth. While the feel and power of this router is great the other problems led me to a score of three. Fortunately my larger Bosch routers are so wonderful that I do not have to reach for this router too often.

It was interesting to read these reviews after I bought this router. Bosch seems to have decided to address the common complaint that the spindle lock button doesn't work by now *supplying* the wrench they recommend as the kludge-fix for the collet problem. I guess that's an improvement? I also notice that many users complain that bits have a tendency to slip in the collet, which led to me to wonder whether Bosch didn't reengineer the collet to tighten it up to the point where *you can't get it to accept a bit*. At least that was my experience. Loosen the thing all the way and it's still too tight for a bit. In the end I stuck the tapered part of a nail set into the collet and tapped on it lightly to force it open a little wider. This worked! A 1/4" bit fits snugly now.

The whole experience led to me entertain serious doubts about the quality of this thing, but after using it for several hours to flush-trim some shelf edges, I have to admit it's a nice tool that works well. Nice soft start, good weight and balance. I haven't tried out all the bells and whistles yet but will update this review with any further problems I encounter.

"Best Bang for your Buck" 2010-03-25

I stumbled upon Bosch when the reverse went out on my small drill. I was in the market for a new tool, and I bought a Bosch. After holding the tool in my hand for the first time, I just couldn't get over the professional weight and feel of such a great priced tool.

Being sold on the Bosch brand name, I kept them in the running when I was researching routers. I have scoured many reviews across the Internet and there have been many reported problems with the switch ceasing to work - especially when used in a router table where the sawdust can really be a problem. Other than the switch issue, almost all other review aspects were excellent, so I decided to give it a go.

I couldn't be happier with the tool. I have put this router through many months of heavy use and I have not seen one problem. My only caveat would be that I did cut the corner out of a sandwich bag and, using electical tape, sealed off the switch. I did this purely due to the reviews I read, so I really couldn't tell you if there is a switch issue or not. What I can tell you is that, with a little preventative maintenance, my router does not have the problem.

The pro's:

1. The gradual start is an outstanding feature. No SURPRISE when you hit the switch.

2. The variable speed control works great and the router has an excellent range of speeds.

3. The depth control knob is easily accessible when mounted in a router table.

4. I have found the plunge base easy to work with.

5. Some don't like them, but, personally, I really like the wood handles on the fixed base.

6. This is just a solid tool.

Con's:

If any, I have only found one. The bits are a little hard to change. I personally don't change them that much. I have been installing chair railing and quarter round moldings, so these are big jobs with not many bit changes.

I have only had this router for a few months and used it a limited amount, but it has worked flawlessly so far. It is mainly being used in the Bosch router table I purchased at the same time, but I also have used it on its own as well. The depth adjustment works very well as does the speed adjustment feature. It is also nice to have both the standard and plunge base.

I've already made a utensil organizer for our kitchen and it looks perfect. I did the research and hands-down this router is the best. I did consider a Delta-Porter but heard so many more positives for Bosch. Cheap routers can be had for near $100 but lack the stability, accuracy, power and options. Shop around and you could find this router for $190 (like me) with no tax and free shipping. It regularly sells from $349-$449. I only ranked 4 out of 5 stars simply because no-ones perfect and manufacturers need to continue striving for perfection.

I'm an experienced craftsman, but not a finish woodworker, so when I needed to significantly modify my favorite Oak TV cabinet in our living room to make it fit a new wide-screen TV, I had to temporarily enter into the world of routers and router bits. I had several jobs to do including rounding a four-foot portion of the cabinet edge with a 3/8" roundover bit. This edge has a molding sticking up just 1 1/4" inches away so only a router with a narrow base could do the job. Another constraint was that my 3/8" roundover bit is 1.26" in diameter. Since I had a one-time application for a router (my other router is used as a tool-post grinder on a metal lathe) I opted for the good reviews and inexpensive price of the PC 7310 and an inexpensive set of bits Yukon Tool YTRB24 24-Piece Router Bit Set.

My experience?...Very satisfied...but I did some customization.

First, the router worked great with very smooth and powerful operation in all the tasks that I used it for...which may be beyond what it is supposed to be used for. I was very careful, given my inexperience with routers, and built up temporary support structures and guide fences for most of my uses which included: round a four-foot portion of a solid oak cabinet edge with a 3/8" roundover bit, flush trim 3/4" oak plywood with a flushtrim bit, mortis out an exposed plywood edge with a mortising bit, cut out mounting holes for cooling fans using a cooling-fan template and a flushtrim bit, cut off the edge of a 3/4" solid oak cabinet door and remold it with an ogee bit combined with two other bits, and chamfer the edge of a new 1/4" Masonite cabinet partition.

Though the router worked great, I had two problems: 1) its base was still too wide to ride on the narrow edge of my cabinet and allow the 3/8" roundover bit to do its job, and 2) the cutter hole in the bottom of the base of the PC 7310 is too small (1.204" diameter) to allow installation of my 1.260" diameter 3/8" roundover bit. Also, the plastic base provided by PC is not particularly flat, as noted by other reviewers, but that was not critical for my application. Since the router baseplate is relatively easy to unscrew, I solved all of these issues by fabricating a new aluminum baseplate for the router with a narrow width on one side as needed for my application, and a larger hole as required for my larger cutters...and I made this baseplate flat.

Minor inconveniences: The cutters are a bit difficult to remove after they're tightened, but my Yukon cutters all had a ridge near the shaft so that a screwdriver could be used with a twist to break them free. Also, I invariably chose to remove the entire base to install and remove the cutters, but that took only seconds.

Bottom Line: the router did a great job for me and was amply powerful to not visibly labor on my significant tasks with oak cabinetry. My custom modifications solved my particular problems, but these are probably unneeded for the vast majority of the router's intended use. I highly recommend it.
